Englewood Jetski Rentals + Tours

Effective Date: May 28, 2026

This Boater Requirements page explains what guests need before renting or operating a jet ski with Englewood Jet Ski. These requirements are based on Florida personal watercraft rules, safety standards, and Englewood Jet Ski operating policies.

All renters, operators, and passengers must follow Florida law, staff instructions, posted waterway rules, and all safety requirements provided before departure. If a guest does not meet the required qualifications, does not have the required documents, or cannot safely participate, Englewood Jet Ski may refuse service, require a guided ride, or stop the ride.

1. Minimum Age to Rent

A person must be at least 18 years old to rent a personal watercraft in Florida.

  • The renter must provide a valid government-issued photo ID.
  • The renter must complete all required rental agreements and waivers before departure.
  • The renter is responsible for the jet ski, passengers, equipment, and compliance with all rental rules.
  • The renter may not allow an unapproved person to operate the jet ski.

2. Minimum Age to Operate

A person must be at least 14 years old to operate a personal watercraft in Florida.

  • Meeting the minimum legal age does not automatically guarantee approval to operate.
  • Every operator must complete the required safety briefing before riding.
  • Every operator must understand and follow all staff instructions.
  • Englewood Jet Ski may require a guest to ride as a passenger instead of operating if staff determines that operation would be unsafe.

3. Florida Boater Education Requirement

Florida does not issue a traditional boating license for recreational boaters. However, anyone born on or after January 1, 1988 must meet Florida boater safety education requirements before operating a vessel powered by 10 horsepower or more, including a jet ski.

Operators born on or after January 1, 1988 must have one of the following:

  • A valid Florida Boating Safety Education ID Card.
  • Proof of completion of an approved boating safety course.
  • A valid temporary boating safety certificate accepted under Florida law.
  • Another acceptable boating safety credential recognized by Florida requirements.

Operators who are required to have boater education proof must also carry a valid photo ID while operating.

4. Temporary Boater Certificate

Visitors and guests who do not already have a permanent boating safety education card may be able to complete an approved temporary certificate exam before operating. The temporary certificate is commonly used by vacationers and short-term renters who need to satisfy Florida’s boater education requirement.

  • The certificate must be completed before the guest operates the jet ski.
  • The guest must provide proof of completion when required.
  • The guest must also have a valid photo ID.
  • Guests should allow enough time before their reservation to complete any required exam or documentation.

If you are unsure whether you need a temporary certificate, contact Englewood Jet Ski before your reservation: https://englewoodjetski.com/contact/

5. Required Identification

Renters and operators must bring the required identification and documents to check-in.

  • Valid government-issued photo ID.
  • Required boater education proof, if applicable.
  • Rental confirmation or booking information.
  • Payment method used for the reservation, when requested for verification.
  • Signed waiver and rental agreement, completed before departure.

Failure to bring required documents may result in delay, refusal of service, or loss of reservation time.

6. Who Must Complete the Safety Briefing

Every renter, operator, and potential operator must complete Englewood Jet Ski’s required safety briefing before departure. Prior jet ski experience does not replace the safety briefing.

The briefing may cover:

  • Jet ski controls and safe operation.
  • Starting, stopping, turning, slowing down, and reboarding.
  • Engine cut-off switch and safety lanyard use.
  • Life jacket rules.
  • No-wake zones, slow-speed areas, channel markers, and local riding boundaries.
  • Safe distance from boats, docks, shorelines, swimmers, paddlers, wildlife, and other jet skis.
  • Weather, emergency, and communication procedures.

7. Life Jacket Requirement

Every person operating or riding on a jet ski must wear a properly fitted, U.S. Coast Guard-approved, non-inflatable wearable life jacket while on the water.

  • Life jackets must remain fastened during the entire ride.
  • Inflatable life jackets are not allowed for personal watercraft operation.
  • Children and smaller passengers must have a properly fitted life jacket.
  • Guests may not remove, loosen, misuse, or exchange life jackets while riding.

8. Passenger Requirements

Passengers must be able to ride safely, remain seated, wear a properly fitted life jacket, and follow staff instructions.

  • Passengers must remain seated while the jet ski is moving.
  • Passengers must be able to hold on safely.
  • Passengers may not interfere with the operator’s control of the jet ski.
  • Passengers may not stand, jump, lean dangerously, or intentionally cause instability.
  • Children may ride only when staff determines that the child can safely participate with a properly fitted life jacket.

9. Operator Responsibility

The approved operator is responsible for the safe operation of the jet ski.

Operators must:

  • Operate only within the approved riding area or tour route.
  • Keep the engine cut-off lanyard attached while operating.
  • Follow all idle-speed, no-wake, slow-speed, manatee-zone, and restricted-area rules.
  • Maintain a safe distance from other vessels, docks, shorelines, swimmers, wildlife, and obstacles.
  • Operate at a safe speed for conditions.
  • Never operate while impaired by alcohol, drugs, or impairing medication.
  • Stop and notify staff immediately if there is a mechanical issue, collision, grounding, injury, or unsafe condition.

10. Conditions That May Prevent a Guest From Operating

Englewood Jet Ski may refuse to allow a guest to operate if staff determines that the guest cannot safely control the jet ski or does not meet the required conditions.

Reasons may include, but are not limited to:

  • Missing required ID or boater education documentation.
  • Failure to complete or understand the safety briefing.
  • Unsafe behavior during check-in or instruction.
  • Suspected impairment.
  • Inability to wear a properly fitted life jacket.
  • Inability to sit, balance, hold on, communicate, or respond to instructions safely.
  • Weather, water, traffic, or equipment conditions that make operation unsafe.

11. Operating Hours

Personal watercraft may not be operated from one-half hour after sunset to one-half hour before sunrise. All rentals and tours must stay within the legal operating window.

  • Sunset rides may be adjusted based on daylight, weather, visibility, and legal operating time.
  • Late arrivals may lose riding time if the remaining legal operating window is limited.
  • Englewood Jet Ski may shorten, delay, or reschedule a ride when timing creates a safety or compliance issue.

12. Guests Visiting From Out of State or Outside the U.S.

Out-of-state and international guests are welcome, but they must still satisfy Florida’s operating requirements.

  • Bring a valid government-issued photo ID.
  • Bring any boating safety card or certificate you already have.
  • Complete an approved temporary certificate if Florida requires it for your situation.
  • Ask Englewood Jet Ski before your reservation if you are unsure what applies to you.

13. Recommended Pre-Arrival Checklist

To avoid delays at check-in, guests should prepare before arriving.

  • Review the Safety Policy before your ride.
  • Bring a valid photo ID.
  • Complete any required boater education or temporary certificate before check-in.
  • Wear clothing suitable for water, sun, wind, and saltwater conditions.
  • Use reef-safe sunscreen when possible.
  • Secure glasses, phones, keys, and loose personal items.
  • Arrive early enough to complete check-in, waiver review, safety briefing, and fitting for safety gear.

14. No Guarantee of Approval to Operate

Meeting the minimum age or document requirements does not guarantee approval to operate. Englewood Jet Ski may make final safety decisions based on guest ability, behavior, conditions, equipment, guide instructions, insurance requirements, or operational judgment.

A guest who does not qualify to operate may be allowed to ride as a passenger when it is safe and permitted. In some cases, Englewood Jet Ski may recommend a guided ride instead of an open rental.

15. Questions Before Booking

If you have questions about age requirements, boater education, temporary certificates, passenger eligibility, or what to bring, contact Englewood Jet Ski before your reservation.
